What are the Symptoms of Tinnitus?
When it comes to tinnitus, the earlier you seek treatment, the better your chances of achieving a successful treatment outcome. However, the first step to finding relief is understanding your symptoms. A number of symptoms and signs can be found in association with tinnitus. These include:
Worn down teeth
Ringing in the ears
Tenderness of the muscles of mastication
Pain in or around the TMJoint (with or without noises)
Otalgia (ear pain) aggravated by mandibular movement
Neck pain
Poorly fitting dental work or dentures
Bruxism (tooth grinding)
Dizziness and disequilibrium
Stuffiness in the ears
Clinical experience does show that symptoms like ear fullness, ear pain, hearing changes, and tinnitus can sometimes occur together in patients with jaw dysfunction, including Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. Because the jaw joint sits close to the ear structures and shares nearby nerve pathways—especially through the trigeminal nerve—symptoms in this region can overlap and sometimes be difficult to distinguish from primary ear disorders. Tinnitus is a complex symptom with many possible causes, including inner ear disorders, noise exposure, medication effects, and neurologic factors. TMJ-related dysfunction is considered one potential contributing factor. A TMJ CT scan can be useful in specific cases to evaluate the bony structures of the jaw joints and identify degenerative changes, asymmetry, or other structural abnormalities. A comprehensive evaluation must combine clinical findings, symptom history, functional assessment, and collaboration with ENT.
